In the story grapes are harvested in the fields as work for the servants who are living at El Rancho De las Rosas. These grapes are in the back of the house and it is in orchards, which are in lines, and they are harvested in the season of grapes. These grapes symbolizes the money that Ramona and Sixto Ortega earn from the grapes that they sell. They get a lot of money from picking the grapes and that is why Esperanza is rich in the story. She gets all her stuff from the money from the grapes and the grapes are sort of like a product that produces profit.
The papayas were gotten by Papa and ordered. Papa ordered the papayas as a secret. The papayas were for Esperanza birthday as a secret present since Esperanza loved papayas. Papa sent the papayas back to El Rancho De las Rosas the day of the night he died. The papayas symbolize the last thing that was sent by Papa and Esperanza treasures it.
Guavas were ordered to Alfonso and Miguel. They used these guavas to fill up a wagon. The truth was that these guavas were for an escape plan from Tio and Marco Luis treachery. They are leaving the Ranch in quiet and secretly. They make it to the train station without getting caught.
It is onion season when Esperanza gets to the United States. She arrives at the place in California. At the place Esperanza sees there is different camps and all the different ethnicity types have separate camps. The onion symbolizes how Esperanza hates the camp and still feels rich. She thinks her camp is like a rich room and complains and Mama explains why it is not a rich room.
The Potatoes were peeled into potato eyes while Esperanza and Hortensia were working in North America, in the camps. Esperanza wasn't supposed to work but her mother was very ill so she took her place and worked. Potatoes symbolize Esperanza's love for her mother.
Avocados were cut in half by Hortensia while Esperanza realizes that she is poor by looking at her hand which were really dirty. she then covered them in avocado to get all the dirt and wrinkles off. The avocado symbolizes how Esperanza truly understands that she is poor and she will never be the same.
Asparagus has harvested. This before the high temperature hits the valley in June. The strikers are gathering more in numbers. They are going to strike at the start of Asparagus season. The Asparagus symbolizes the strikes of Marta and the Mexican Revolution.
Peaches were the last section of the book. Esperanza understands that Isabel will not win Queen of May. She now Knows this because of the things she learned about Mexican discrimination. Isabel does not know this however. Since Isabel has the best grades in school she should be the Queen of May but because of Mexican discrimination she doesn't win the Queen of May. Esperanza brings peaches, Isabel's favorite fruit, to Isabel because she knew she wouldn't win. The peach symbolizes how Esperanza shows compassion for Isabel and cares for her.
