Esperanza Rising is a novel written by Pam Munoz Ryan. It is a novel about a wealthy girl who had everything she could ever dream of with a mother and father, Ramona Ortega, and Sixto Ortega. One day, Esperanza's father and some other men were killed by bandits while they were working in the ranch. Esperanza became very sad and feels she is always missing something. She takes a doll from Papa and loves it because it was a present from her dad for her birthday. Because Tio Luis, (Esperanza's uncle) claims that he owns El Rancho de las Rosas. He also proposes to Ramona Ortega for a marriage. Ramona Ortega rejects Tio Luis' offer, ouch! Tio Luis is now furious. He rides off on his horse and leaves. But after Tio Luis burns down El Rancho de las Rosas, he proposes again, but this time Ramona Ortega accepts. After Tio Luis leaves happily, Ramona Ortega(Esperanza's Mom) comes up with a plan to leave Mexico and go to North America. The plan is to hide in a wagon truck and have Miguel and Alfonso, servants that are great friends with the owners Sixto Ortega and Ramona Ortega, be the drivers so they will look like a farmer and his son.
Hortensia (Esperanza's Aunt, married to Alfonso), Ramona Ortega, and Esperanza hide in the wagon under guavas in the truck. After a while, the truck came a stop at a train station and dropped them off. Ramona, Esperanza, Miguel, Hortensia, and Alfonso rode the train to California to get a job. After they got there, they were greeted by Miguel's family. After a while, Esperanza started taking care of the Pepe and Lupe while Isabel went to school. One day, dust bowl came and made a mess. Unfortunately, not all people were safe, and Mama got sick for 5 months because of Valley Fever. At the end Esperanza was able to get back to the old life she once had before.
